New CBD Oil Research: Yet More Applications!
16 July 2021The hemp plant can be imagined like a treasure chest filled with exceptional and medicinal substances. Some of these substances have been studied extensively, particularly the cannabinoid THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), yet we still have much to learn about others, including CBD (cannabidiol). That’s why it is good to see so many scientists delve into the unexplored potential of CBD. Even though many people already use CBD for pain relief, improved sleep, and its positive effects on mood and emotion, it appears there may be even more applications. That why this blog looks ahead at a number of new studies that are currently underway to unlock the full potential of CBD Oil applications.
What We Know About The Applications Of CBD Oil
Even though people have been using hemp for millennia, we still know relatively little about all the active components hidden deep within the cells of this plant. By now, about 113 cannabinoids have been discovered, including celebrities like THC and CBD alongside less familiar ones such as CBG, CBN, and CBC. So what caused the sudden surge in interest these cannabinoids now enjoy? As it turns out, it is becoming increasingly clear that many of these substances could make positive contributions to our health and wellbeing.
The basic reason for this huge untapped potential is our own body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS). This system is able to employ cannabinoids to perform regulatory functions. Sleep, thought, digestion, and many other important processes all involve some degree of control by the endocannabinoid system. The ECS is constantly trying to maintain an internal state of balance called homeostasis. It can use cannabinoids to relay messages to your cells; these can be endocannabinoids produced by your own body, but plant-based phytocannabinoids such as CBD are fit for this purpose, too.
Right now, more than 300 studies are underway to further uncover the workings and properties of CBD. This spectacular growth is partly due to increased consumer awareness, but it received an extra impetus through the UN’s recent removal of cannabis from their list of dangerous substances. This grants scientists more freedom in studying the compounds of the hemp plant.
Research Into New CBD Oil Applications
The website of the US National Library of Medicine provides a list of all current studies with a focus on CBD. For your convenience, we selected some of the most interesting and revolutionary entries, to show you that the potential of CBD could be even greater than you already thought.
CBD Oil And Chronic Lower Back Pain
Lower back pain is one of the most prevalent forms of back aches. The increase in office work of the past two decades means that many of us spend many hours seated in non-ergonomic positions that cause back aches. Previous studies indicated that many lower back pain patients have heightened activated glial cell counts. These cells serve a number of important purposes, including neuron maintenance, brain tissue support, clearing waste materials left behind by dead nerve cells, and keeping the blood-brain barrier intact.
A research team at Massachusetts General Hospital is investigating the effect of CBD on 20 subjects suffering from chronic lower back pain in a clinical trial. The researchers compare cerebrospinal PET-MR scans before and after administration of CBD. These scans reveal glial cell activation. The hypothesis is that CBD can curb excess glial cell activation, resulting in less severe back pain in turn. The study is nearing completion, and is currently awaiting data analysis.
Research Into CBD For PTSD
PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) is an umbrella term for a range of symptoms that may arise from traumatic experience. This condition is ot only common among soldiers; PTSD can affect anyone. It is precisely because so many people struggle with PTSD that the University of Texas in Austin decided to launch a full-scale investigation into CBD’s potential for a positive impact on these symptoms. This is a randomised and double-blind study design involving 120 participants with PTSD.
The study will take eight weeks, during which all subjects self-administer either CBD Oil (300mg) or a placebo. Evaluations based on extensive questionnaires are set for one month and three months after conclusion of the study. The researchers expect that the group receiving CBD are more likely to experience improvement of symptoms than the placebo group. The study is set to conclude by May 2023.
CBD For Children With Autism
This study is initiated by San Diego University in California. Some children with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) display severe behavioural problems, including aggression, self-harm, and extreme hyperactivity. This makes it difficult for these children to function socially, and causes severe learning impairments. Family life can be severely affected, too.
At present, parents tend to administer CBD without any form of guidance, and without determining the ideal dosage. Nonetheless, users generally applaud the effects of this cannabinoid on their children’s behaviour. To provide more clarity, this study was designed around administering Epidolex (a CBD solution) to children. The study’s 30 subjects are all boys aged 7 to 14 diagnosed with autism and serious behavioural problems. More subjects are needed, but the team hope to conclude the study by 2021.
More Studies Into The Applications Of CBD Oil
As you can see, science is making solid progress in uncovering the secrets of CBD. There is a lot of research going on, all looking for new applications of cannabidiol. These are sound research designs, too, involving placebos and control groups, and studying actual people rather than rodents like most of the early stage studies. Now that we are about to receive more results that can be applied directly to people, everyone is looking forward to the upcoming publications. Of course, we will keep you up to speed on all the latest developments.
