Cannabidiol for Women: Can It Help with Hormonal Issues?
29 January 2025Cannabidiol has various beneficial properties that can be particularly useful for women. Many women experience hormonal imbalances that significantly impact their daily lives. In this blog, we explore the potential benefits of CBD for these hormonal issues.
Hormonal Fluctuations and Imbalances
Hormones play a crucial role in numerous bodily processes, including sleep, appetite, reproduction, and mood. They are produced by different organs and glands and help transmit signals throughout the body. While many hormones exist, progesterone and estrogen are especially important for women as they regulate the menstrual cycle.
Hormones influence overall physical health and mood. When out of balance, they can lead to various symptoms. Women may experience hormonal fluctuations due to pregnancy, stopping birth control, or menopause. Stress can also negatively affect hormonal balance.
Hormonal imbalances can cause:
- Depressie
- Krampen
- PMS
- Endometriose
- Vermoeidheid
- Onregelmatige menstruatie
- Menopauze klachten, zoals opvliegers, geïrriteerdheid, osteoporose
- Slaapproblemen
- Hoofdpijn
- Gewichtstoename
- Laag libido
Since hormones can cause significant issues for women, CBD tablets may provide relief by supporting hormonal balance.
Cannabidiol for Women: How Does It Affect Hormones?
To understand how cannabidiol benefits women, it is essential to examine which hormones play a role and their functions. The two primary female hormones are progesterone and estrogen. Progesterone is a precursor hormone, serving as a building block for other hormones, including sex hormones. It is released by the ovaries, helps regulate menstruation, and is crucial for fertility.
Estrogen supports egg development, uterine health, and breast tissue formation. It is primarily produced in the ovaries and adrenal glands.
Throughout life, hormone levels fluctuate. If they become significantly imbalanced, uncomfortable symptoms can arise. CBD may offer benefits to women as it interacts with the endocannabinoid system (ECS), which influences hormone balance.
CBD and Its Effects on Hormonal Levels in Women
While extensive research has been conducted on CBD’s effectiveness, studies on its impact on hormonal balance are still in their early stages. One challenge is that much research focuses on cannabis as a whole, including THC, CBD, and other cannabinoids and terpenes. This interaction between compounds (known as the entourage effect) makes it difficult to determine which specific substance affects hormones.
However, it is clear that cannabinoids influence the body’s hormonal system by interacting with the ECS and cannabinoid receptors. The ECS is vital in maintaining the balance of various physiological systems, including the immune system and hormone regulation.
When addressing hormonal issues, an effective solution would ideally alleviate menstrual pain (cramps, headaches) and menopausal symptoms. The latter often includes mood swings, joint pain, osteoporosis, and hot flashes. Below, we discuss some research findings on CBD’s effects.
Research on CBD for Hormonal Issues
A 2022 study examined the effects of CBD on mice with estrogen deficiencies. The results showed significant improvements in blood glucose levels and bone density. Additionally, inflammation in the gut decreased, and there was an increase in beneficial gut bacteria.
According to Diana Roopchand, an assistant professor involved in the study, this is the first research proving CBD can help with estrogen deficiency—a primary cause of menopausal symptoms. While anecdotal evidence has long suggested that CBD can be beneficial for menopausal women, this study provides scientific confirmation.
A 2024 study further supports CBD’s impact on hormonal balance. The study was based on the premise that the ECS is involved in gynecological processes. It was conducted using surveys and a quasi-experimental approach.
The study examined 230 participants who used a broad-spectrum CBD product (100 mg dose) designed for menstrual issues, compared to 77 participants using conventional pain relief methods. Over two menstrual cycles, the CBD group experienced fewer and less severe symptoms, reduced need for pain medication, and improved daily functioning. At least 72% of the CBD group reported moderate to significant improvement in symptoms.
