CBD Tolerance: Everything You Should Know
31 July 2020Maybe the thought already crossed your mind while using CBD: is it possible to build up a tolerance to CBD? This may occur with certain kinds ofmedication, but also with coffee, alcohol and drugs. If this happens, you need more and more of the product, to achieve the desired effect. So does such a thing as CBD tolerance exist?
How CBD Works
The human body is complicated. It consists of multiple systems that work together, in order to keep everything balanced. One of these important elements is the endocannabinoid system (ECS), which plays a role in regulating all kinds of functions. It sends signals to the brain and other organs, and this way makes sure the body functions properly. It helps preventing problems by intervening efficiently.
The compound CBD, which is extracted from the hemp plant, is a cannabinoid. This means that it works well together with our ECS, and it may influence it in certain ways. If your ECS doesn’t function properly, CBD may give it the right stimulus to help it function the way it should. This way, CBD could help, for example, treat sleeping problems, PMS, stress complaints, depression or headaches.
Building Up Tolerance
The question remains if you build up a tolerance when using CBD regularly and for a longer period of time. It doesn’t matter whether you are using CBD oil or tablets. Building up a tolerance will happen though, with THC, the other compound extracted form the hemp plant. As a matter of fact, THC has a totally different effect on the body compared with CBD. CBD doesn’t make you high.
Building up a tolerance means that your body gets used to the compound. You need more every time, if you want to get the same results. Take for example coffee. The first time you drink a cup of coffee, you’ll feel really alert and energetic. But when you start drinking a couple of cups of coffee every day, this effect will wear off. Your body gets used to the caffeine. To get the same boost of energy, you’re going to need much more coffee.
Building up tolerance is not the same as addiction or developing a dependence. The receptors in your body just don’t react as efficient to the compound. That is why it will not generate the same effect.
CBD Tolerance
And does your body build up a tolerance to CBD? There is some research that seems to indicate that this isn’t the case. It could even be that the opposite is true. When you use CBD for a longer period, you will develop reverse tolerance. This means that over time, you need less of the compound, to get the results you wanted.
Research shows that by influencing the receptors of the ECS, CBD stimulates the cells to be more active. Instead of ending up insensitive to the compound, you can keep using CBD, and you’ll even need less of it. It’s true though, that more research on this subject is necessary, because there are people who report that they seem to have built up a tolerance to CBD. They do need to take more of it every time, to see results.
In case you found out you have developed a tolerance to CBD, it might be best to take a break from CBD. You should refrain from taking CBD for at least 2 to 3 days, so your body has got time to reset itself. After that, you can start with a low dose and slowly increase that. This way, you’ll probably feel the effect of CBD much more.
